To clip or not to clip?...

When you first learn to ride a bicycle you put your feet on the pedals and spun away. When it was time for dinner you hopped off and left your bicycle temporarily disposed in the front yard. If you continued on your bicycle, eventually you probably went to Clip-less Pedals. Clip-less means you clip into the pedal – you’re “connected” to the bike. A Non-Clipless pedal is a flat pedal that leaves your foot free to “disconnect” from the pedal.

Having the ability to easily step off the bike with no hindrance does have some benefits. Do you ride mostly in your neighborhood? Is your bike riding more casual? Is the bike more casual? Are you riding 8 blocks to the café?  If so, platforms/Non-Clipless pedals are great! Getting high quality pedals with nice bearings will make the ride extra smooth Whether you’re planning to ride the dirt or the pavement, there are many different styles and types to chose from.

To clip... being clipped to the bicycle can be explained best as, “the bike becomes a part of you.” Your connection is maximized, you are clipped in. Your smooth spin is delivering your power through a complete shoe and pedal system and into the drive train. If you’re fitted correctly, you are balanced and poised to deliver power at a near constant rate. Energy is delivered all the way around the crank stroke and on to the chain rings. Efficiency is much higher, your distance for the same effort increases. You are not just pedaling up down...

There are many shoes in the world of cycling - mild understatement! There is something there for you. Even if it's just a ride to the cafe, there's a shoe that can make it comfortable and be clipped/Clip-less. The same is true of pedals, there is one that is just right for your purpose.   The real questions are how far are you planning to ride and what are you going to do when you get off your bike at the end of your trip.  If you’re going a short distance – to the café – then platform pedals are perfect.  If you’re planning for a long ride (25 miles or more), you’ll be glad for the efficient and comfortable connection to your drivetrain that clipless pedals provide.  No matter where you go – enjoy the ride!
